What is Self-Actualization?

First coined by Kurt Goldstein in 1939 and later popularized by Abraham Maslow in 1943 as the pinnacle of his theory surrounding a Hierarchy of Needs, self-actualization has come to signify a process and condition where an individual develops towards their own highest potential. In other words, to holistically become all that one is capable of becoming.

While neither Maslow nor since has there been an empirically prescribed method for achieving this state, in recent decades, Dr. Martin Seligman developed the field of Positive Psychology, which may be understood as the science of well-being. In the applied research in this field, methods for increasing aspects of well-being offer a foundation for the path of individual and group self-actualization.
